Abstract : Andrew Feenberg’s Critical Theory of Technology recognizes that technologies develop within settings that concretize certain values into the technology in what Feenberg calls a “technical code.” In capitalist societies, technical codes orient the technology to producing wealth for the bourgeoisie, disadvantaging the marginalized. The development of AI as an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars in the past few years signals clearly how AI is positioned as one capitalist technology among others.
Feenberg offers a hopeful note, however. He argues that democratic interventions can change the technical code underwriting a technology and orient it toward other participant interests. Given that AI is itself deeply oriented toward mathematical efficiency, this is a particularly difficult task, but one we should consider—how can AI be developed in a way specifically oriented toward larger human needs over enriching the world’s wealthiest?
